Meet Vicky!

 

BETA received a call last week about a Baboon kept behind a Beirut restaurant. Far from her home, brought to Lebanon as a baby, the animal was confined to a small metal cage for over 8 years where she was left to watch the world go by. It took some convincing, but the owner finally agreed to give us Vicky the Baboon so that we can grant her freedom.

 

Lebanon has a huge problem with wild animals being brought into the country and sold to pet stores. These animals are captured from their natural habitat, only to suffer the long, frightening journey to Beirut. Gas stations and restaurants go on to buy them to attract customers; some villa owners even purchase the animals as yard decoration. The once wild creatures are kept in cages, and often neglected or abused by their owners, who sometimes use sticks and stones to torture them for entertainment.

 

BETA has rescued Baboons, Vervets and Macaques from appalling conditions, but the animals cannot be sent back to the wild. After their traumatic ordeal, we must send them to sanctuaries for a second chance at freedom. Now it’s time for Vicky to go to a sanctuary, where she will receive treatment and rehabilitation. She may not know it yet, but she will soon be free to climb a tree and play with other Baboons!

We are now raising funds for Vicky’s care while she is here with us. Once we locate a suitable sanctuary that will accept the Baboon, we will fly her to her new home. We are counting on your donations! It’s the only way we can save Vicky and other animals like her.
