Year 2016 was full of challenges for BETA. The on-going refugee crisis with its immediate and compelling needs led to a major drop in donations for the many abandoned, stray and injured animals we rescue and care for. At the start of the year, food and veterinary bills were escalating, rain was pouring into the shelter, more and more animals needed our help, and we really didn’t know how we were going to manage.
However, thanks to your generosity and support, it has been a year of great achievement. With your help, encouragement and donations, we were able to rescue, care for and re-home hundreds of dogs, cats and other wildlife animals.
Thanks to you, hundreds of animals across the country received the help they needed during 2016: 130 urgent veterinary procedures, including 50 emergency surgeries 320 dogs and cats neutered 143 dogs and cats re-homed 220 dogs and cats taken into the shelter and given the chance of a better life Your generous and enthusiastic support for our events boosted our fundraising, particularly at our Annual Dog Show and Gala Dinner, which are always our standout events.
The Gala Dinner at the Sursock Palace was an unforgettable night, and the number of ex-BETA competitors attending the Dog Show with their new owners warmed our hearts! Your marvellous support of our crowd funding campaign on the Zoomaal platform raised sufficient funds to put a brand new roof on a large part of the dog shelter, as well as covering the central walkway with clear roofing that allows the light to penetrate, enhancing the wellbeing of all the residents. The two paddling pools that we received as a donation made the joy of our doggies at the shelter during the summer; and the shipping container, also a donation allowed us to buy and store the dog food in bulk. If you visit our dog and cat shelters, you will find happy and cheerful places, full of well-fed and cared dogs and cats. You have helped us achieve what we thought was impossible only a few years ago!
However, our work is never finished, and we need your help more than ever. Every day pets are abused. Every day, people abandon their pets and we have to face the challenge of how to rescue, accommodate, feed and care for them along with the 550+ dogs and 150 cats we already have. It is hard to find adopters in Lebanon, and the adoption rate is far slower than our rate of intake. Our food bills alone exceed $10,000 a month, despite periodic donations from some food suppliers and the medical bills are astronomical, despite generous discounts and facilities from our vets. Please continue to support us; your contribution will make a huge difference!
Donate or why not Sponsor a dog or cat and follow his or her progress? It is only through your help that we can prevent suffering and provide hands-on care for thousands of animals across the country, as well as bringing some quality to the lives of our hundreds of residents while they wait in hope for their forever homes. On behalf of all the animals, and with all our hearts, we thank you.
But amid the huge explosion in the heart of Beirut, the economic crisis and financial collapse in Lebanon, along with the COVID-19 repercussions, exacerbated by political unrest and mounting tension in the region, progress has been slow due to the lack of funds.
Currently, a fully-equipped stable and a monkey enclosure have been built and work is ongoing to finish the dog kennels and the specially designed area for seniors.
We must finish the project before the eviction notice is enforced and our hundreds of animals are left without a refuge.
This is a plea of help to provide the animals’ basic needs such as food and medical care and to carry out our daily mission
This is a plea to come together and provide them with the safe haven they deserve.
Our country is living a tragedy.
Your help is fundamental to these animals’ future.
